Does anybody have any suggestions?  I was thinking about StartLogic.com or dot5hosting.com.  Any experiences with these?  I had bluehost but they sucked so i dropped them.

Hi! First, if you take a closer look at their address, you'll find that Startlogic, Dot5hosting (and ipowerweb) share the same location. It would appear they're one company's set of brands.

Other than that, it's good to get info on companies from multiple places, because sometimes websites have vested interest in making a company look good (or bad). I prefer smartly moderated hosting forums for feedback on hosts, but that's just me. Some simply prefer old Google.

Bluehost had a couple of problems recently. When did you last use them?

yes read the revies, but not those that have only top10 or top 20 compnies reviews as these directories are usually own and managed by the hosting providers themsleves

Some such "top hosts" websites, are indeed owned by hosts, but I believe most are owned by third parties/individuals. That alone though doesn't make the "top" accurate, or representative for the industry.

Please share some domains that you are/have been hosting with them. You may simply send them to me by PM if you prefer to keep them away from the public eye.

Many top host sites are actually owned by affiliates, as are some hosting coupon sites. I would guess the ranking order at most top hosts has more to do with who pays the biggest commission, than who is the best host. Sites that only have a top 5 or top 10 are more likely to be affiliate owned. The ones actually based on user reviews usually have a large list of hosts and you can read actual reviews on each one.

Hi,

Google is your best friend! make a list of hosts that have plans that are suitable, short list then Google each host looking for reviews even check out other forums for reviews. No one person can give you advise because everyone has had different experiences. Some hosts stand out depending on what you are looking for, a company that prides itself in offering top notch support will in most cases also have reliable hardware Smiley

then Google
Not to underestimate the power of Google, as it can indeed help unearth very valuable resources and information, but the information it uncovers must always be judged carefully. Who writes the review, who's to say it's not a shill or an envious competitor, or a disgruntled ex-employee etc. All things that one must pay attention to and look for telltale signs of.

Even with forums, I don't think you get an accurate experience of a host unless you try them out yourself. Before I started my own web hosting business, I used a couple of different hosting providers and trialled more, and some that I'd heard were great, turned out to be crap, and vice versa. Also, every web host will have someone that doesnt like them, or who had a bad experience. That's just an element of business unfortunately.

Actually just to add. Look for hosts that have money-back-guarantees, or free trial periods where you can test their stuff out, then just go looking and trialling until you find something you like. Make sure you test out their technical support though.

Nothing can replace direct experience. And nothing can help if you're plain unlucky. With any choice in life, a bit of good luck is needed.

That I can definitely agree with. Something to keep an eye out on too when trialling a new host. A while ago when assessing a new host, I'd do it by assessing their support prior to becoming a customer of theirs to determine the quality of their technical support. Well in operating my own host, I've discovered that was never an accurate way of assessing a host.

The reason for this is depending on the company, some hosts put a higher importance on technical support staff, or a higher importance on pre-sales support staff. Personally I prefer a higher importance on tech staff, but either is good. So you can get a misleading idea of what the tech staff are to deal with if the only people your basing your opinion on is their pre-sales staff.

Just something I remember Smiley.
