I started with 1and1 and ordered the software package too.
The reasons that led me to quit were the following:
1. It takes 30 days to get your advertising vouchers
2. They have no file manager
3. All ftp and subdomain names are preassigned - I had something like a85qfh3621
4. The site editors gave me errors which 1and1 acknowledges and put me on a "priority list" - 30 days past and I was still site builder less
5. Support was outsourced, I was asked to open a ticket for many of my questions
6. Ticket and email support took FOREVER to get a response from - see mt proof
7. I was denied a refund (90 day money back guarantee) and was refered to a FAQ page that said I was locked into a contract
8. Apperantly a special promotion is a software package
9. Biling (phone) harrassed me and when I was close to breaking free of there grasp on the phone I was transferred to a quickly talking manager (Benjerman) who spoke fast and eventually ended the call and said I had to talk to legal, but I emailed complaints instead...
10. I was told I would get a refund from one person via email (see proof), 1 time on the phone from Lina who later denied it even when she said I could quote her and was denied it from 2 other billing people.

It took several weeks but I finally got a reply from complaints saying: okay to the refund, see the proof.
Since my proof is a little over 300KB and exceeds the file limit size for attachments, go to the link provided below to download the PDF. I also edited out some potentially confidential info.

Sorry to hear you has such a difficult time with them.

I have heard of other companies issuing free software with their hosting packages, that they simply require that you first send them the CD back, before a (perhaps prorated) refund can be issued. Was this discussed as an option in your case?

Attachments size limit increased. Feel free to add the document as an attachment as well, if you want to.

Thank you for increasing the attachment size limit. As for the refund for sending the software back, I did when the tech support told me too. I was told by billing I was still locked in regardless of the software being returned (I hadn't downloaded any keys online nor had I broken the seal which said to open you must agree to the tos). I was denied my account back and was told that the software was from a new "provider" so you can't get out of the 12 month lock.

IMO if there's something wrong with them, it's because of management issues and company policies rather than the overselling alone.

Wow mate, good luck choosing your next Web Hosting Provider. If you want I can give you a few recommendations but I can't post them just in case I don't want to get warned Smiley

Recommendations based on previous experience with providers are allowed. It's self promotion that belongs only in the advertising section. Smiley
