When I do a search on Google for Hosting Reviews it displays 5,100,000 results.  I find this utterly ridiculous as most of the sites deal with canned advertising in one form or another and do not show any results for reviews written by actual customers.

Any thoughts about real web hosting review sites?

The trouble with most reviews sites is the signal to noise ratio. Some are better than other, of course. But, if you're after some names, webhostingjury.com, hostjury.com, webhostingunleashed.com, findmyhosting.com and webhostingreviews.com would be some of ones I know of.

I am looking at this more from the perspective of a person looking for web hosting for the first time trying to find reasonable review sites to narrow down which company would be best for them.

BTW: You did a great job on whreviews.com

It took me about a half a dozen visits to your site before I figured out you were the author of the articles.

Haven't tried webhostingjury.com but hostjury.com doesn't seem to work properly and seems a bite bias IMO. findmyhosting.com is a bit shady due to most of the big players winning they're award. Just seems like they make it less obvious.  webhostingreviews.com I haven't tried so no opinion at this time. webhostingunleashed.com is a perfect place to find customers that are very upset with they're current host. If your good, you might just be able to turn they're situation around for them *hint *hint.

whreviews.com does a great job and is highly recommended along with hostdisciple.com and whreviews.com and are the most trusted.

In my opinion it is better to search for reviews at such places as this forum or other ones.
Like the following ones for example:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
http://forums.webhostdir.com/
http://www.hostingchitchat.com/
http://www.hosthideout.com/
http://www.webhostingforum.com/
http://www.hostingdiscussion.com/
It is more reliable to listen to real people, and the other good thing that discussions actually help to realize whether the issues with hosting are issue of a client or a hosing company itself.

I think best one can do is to post a review about any host (about whom one does not know any thing) on a review site to determine its authenticity. Just post as abc and praise a host you want. If you can get through it and your review is posted, means the review site does not have adequate means to determine, if you are or were a customer of the host your are praising.

I think you should look for forum posts or threads that give hosts recommendations

Not all the pages there are of web hosting reviews site. eg even this page having text web hosting reviews should be there. I am not ruling out spamming, but mere fact that the backbone of the internet is web hosting and every one using internet is one way or the other effected by quality of the web hosting makes it important for every one to view, share and comment. Which may be the reason of number of pages appearing to have the term web hosting reviews mentioned there.

There are a lot of web hosting review sites, and as loads of people have said before they are dishonest, the companies pay the owners of the web hosting review sites to put their web site up there, and half of them are rubbish.
