There's no limit to the number of keywords you can focus on, though its probably best to go for keyphrases that are easier to get high rankings to. It's better to get 3 visitors a day by being #1 for a good keyphrase that is rarely searched, than getting no traffic for being #100 for a highly popular keyword. Wink

You can have thousand keywords leading to your website, but you must also rank with those keywords on first page.

In terms of SEO,you should target 3 or 4 keywords per page.

try using google keyword tools and plug in what you are offering. You will see a list of commonly searched key terms for your niche. Pick your favorites, the ones you want to market, and start chugging away.

What is your niche? what are you trying to market?

I would keep them low and specific. Perhaps about 5?

If the keywords don't match your content it will not do you any favours.

Well....
I think there is no specific rule to select the keyword. It depends on your products & services and you have to choose it yourself that which keyword is useful for you.

Ideally for a website promotion on an intial basis 10-15 keywords are good. Those keywords need to pass through on page paramaters first followed by off page/link building activities.

Well there is no limit of keywords at all. It depends upon the traffic that how much traffic comes to the site and if more traffic comes then definitely there will be more need of keywords, otherwise there is no limit of keywords.
