The choice would depend on the reseller's target market. From what I know both Linux and Windows are very stable these days, assuming the admin knows what he's doing. Windows carries the advantage of being the only valid choice for Microsoft products like ASP.NET, but carries the disadvantage of a license fee that makes it generally more expensive compared to Linux.

Yeah, it mainly depends on the apps you are planning to host.
If you are planning to host such apps as ASP, aps.net - choose windows hosting.
If you are going to launch PHP apps, Linux will be the best option for you.

Hosting companies provide their services for different operating systems: either Windows or Linux. People are not sure which one to choose.

Are there any particular sites that require only Windows hosting? Are there any restriction on Linux servers? Does it actually matter whether to use Linux or Windows hosting? In this article we'll try to shed some light on this point.

To start with, we would like to state that there are no such notions as right or wrong decision in the world of hosting, there are only decisions made without sufficient information and prior analysis. Before making any decisions about your future webhost you should consider all options.

Both Windows and Linux allow you to host your site on the net. However, there are some differences between them. Neither of them is better as they both have their own advantages. Most people are able to use a Linux webhosting plan without any problems. On the other hand, some people might need to run Windows-based web applications for their sites, which are not supported by Linux servers.

You'll be able to use PHP, Ruby, Perl, Python, or CGI scripting on the Linux servers. If you're going to use ASP or ASP.NET, then choose a Windows Hosting account.

Linux servers are more reliable, cheaper and more user-friendly than Windows hosting server. In case you need to run Windows site applications, a Windows webhosting plan would be the best thing to consider.

Before choosing a proper type of hosting system, analyze the programs/software/applications you'll need to run for your site.
Note: The type of hosting server you choose has nothing to do with the operating system you run on your PC.

its getting harder to find windows based hosting its generally a little more expensive and most of the available scripts these days run on php so I would say, your going to capture more of the market by choosing Linux.

Is that figure from some formal study, or just your own, experience based estimate?
